The Beauty in Things I Could Complain About

The Beauty in Life Not Being What You Anticipated

Contrary to music lyrics, my thirties do not feel like my twenties.  All of the hard work invested in my youth did not set me up to live lavishly.  My overpriced education did not bring me a six-figure income.  The marriage and children and the house did not bring the fulfillment or love that was in the storybooks.  Often times we look at our present and reflect on our past and conclude, boy oh boy, this was not what I expected.  With observations we can become frustrated or even saddened, but then we are reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty in it being more than you desired (sometimes); the Beauty in the surprises that life brings; the Beauty in the confines of life not being so reliable; the Beauty in life being long and having the opportunity to shape it how you want; the Beauty in the unknown; the Beauty in life not being what you anticipated.Image

The Beauty in the Humdrum

A hum provides a particular sound quality of minimal tones.  It has even been described as having only one tone.  The drum provides the beat, the steady course that all things follow accordingly. When something is humdrum it is known to be dull, flat.  Life can sometimes have little excitement and schedules, obligations, bills and responsibility start to shape our days, weeks and months, until the routine becomes our beat and we feel flattened.  Often times the methodical and customary necessities of life can leave us zombie-like, following the one beat, day in and day out, but then you are reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty in no surprises, the Beauty in rocking to the beat you’ve been given, the Beauty in music being made, the Beauty in simplicity, the Beauty in spicing it up on your own terms, the Beauty in the humdrum. images

The Beauty in the Music Nowadays

There was a time I was up on new music and upcoming performances, underground tapes and the next hot artist and now I look at my younger brother for answers or go to Google and YouTube to find out who the heck “they’re” talking about when I hear someone mentioned.  Half these young boys, in A-line t-shirts (unbeknownst to them that they’re called A-line t-shirts) and too tight pants that hang under their buttocks with names that begin with ‘lil  who spit silly lyrics to go along with their silly names seem all the same to me and they all seem unworthy of my money and my time.  Often times I write them off thinking that the state of music, or hip hop specifically, is tragically worsening, but then I reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty in someone is always creating something new and this too shall pass, the Beauty in my friends who are talented, the Beauty in understanding past generations who used to complain about my generation, the Beauty in “old-school” segments that now play my music,  the Beauty in having more reasons to read a book, the Beauty in the music nowadays.waka-cover_june12

The Beauty in the Evening Commute

There is a precise spot on a staircase in the 14th Street-Union Square subway station where you can hear the clown-masked quartet from the upper level as well as a child prodigy pianist on the lower level and also a drummer and his bass guitarist further down the platform. Often the noise of the City can dance dramatically on your head and compel the impossible wish for Bewitching teleportation, but then you are reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty of talent, the Beauty of diversity, the Beauty of the hustle, the Beauty of a specific location, the Beauty of exposure, the Beauty of the evening commute.New York City.
