The Beauty in Things I Could Complain About

The Beauty in Being Swamped

My phone rang today approximately 23 times.  I placed another 14 calls.  I sent text messages about my daughter’s 3rd birthday party, shopped around for a photographer for the wedding I am coordinating, and reviewed a menu, guest list, and invitations for a baby shower I am planning for my sister in law.  By midday, my children were antsy and asking, “mom, can we go outside NOW?” I made three meals, cleaned up after all of them and did, in fact, take the kids out for a long walk and fresh air.  Often times when we are busy we may be overwhelmed and stressed, but then we are reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty in productivity, the Beauty in time passing quickly, the Beauty in unlimited texts, minutes and data, the Beauty in children seeing an example of work, the Beauty in seeing your capacity, the Beauty in a hard day’s work, the Beauty in being swamped.being-busy

The Beauty in Walmart

I do not condone the mistreatment, the underpaying or the unprofessional and exploiting tactics of any company toward its suppliers, customers, employees.  After this short disclaimer I do recognize that this blog may upset some. Labor unions, community groups, grassroots organizations, religious organizations, environmental groups and customers criticize the super retailer as being discriminatory and downright shady in their business dealings with foreign suppliers, employees, and competing sellers.  The people in Mexico and China who make their products are underpaid and they have also been accused of housing their construction workers in foreclosed homes.  Often times big superstores are criticized for hurting local mom and pop shops and although many of these allegations are true we are reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty in one-stop shopping, the Beauty in low prices, the Beauty in convenience, the Beauty in employment for people with special needs, the Beauty in being able to provide more for my family when I have little, the Beauty in Walmart. walmart.topic.395-sfSpan

The Beauty in Doing Something the Hard Way

Last week, I had a conversation with an “informed professional” and was told that I was to gather three items and bring them in to her for her viewing.  I asked if whether I could just make copies and mail them to her to which she adamantly replied, no.  It was imperative for me to go in person. Today, I bundled up two children, one two years old and the other four, and took the subway to another area in the borough. We walked through the drab office and I waited in a long line and when I got to the front of the line I told the woman at the main desk why I was there and she told me, “get off the line, go to that copy machine, put your items in an envelope, and dump it in the mail slot.” Often times when you are forced to do things in the most asinine way you want to yell, “I told you so” or “this would have been better this way,” but then you are reminded of the Beauty: the Beauty in working hard to avoid having to engage inefficient systems, the Beauty in going out with your children, the Beauty in teaching your children how to keep cool, the Beauty in getting it done even if it wasn’t done the best way, the Beauty in compliance, the Beauty in doing something the hard way.
